Adolescence is a time of significant change, and for young people with asthma it can also bring new challenges in managing their condition.

Hormonal changes, increasing independence, busy school and social lives, and the pressures of fitting in can all affect asthma control. As teenagers begin taking greater responsibility for managing their asthma, maintaining good routines and staying engaged with healthcare can become more difficult.

Join the Asthma Society of Ireland for our free online webinar, Adolescent Asthma, on Thursday 10th September from 7–8pm, where leading respiratory experts will discuss how adolescents can confidently manage their asthma and reduce their risk of serious asthma attacks.

What you’ll learn

Professor Basil Elnazir, Consultant Paediatric Respiratory Physician, will explore why adolescence is a particularly important stage in asthma management, including:

  • How puberty and hormonal changes can affect asthma
  • Why teenagers may be at greater risk of poor asthma outcomes
  • The impact of smoking and vaping on asthma
  • The importance of taking asthma medication as prescribed
  • How Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART) can help improve asthma control
  • Why planning the transition from paediatric to adult healthcare services is essential

Respiratory Nurse Mairead Furlong will provide practical advice to help teenagers and their families build confidence in everyday asthma management, including:

  • Avoiding common asthma triggers
  • Remembering to take preventer medication
  • Correct inhaler technique
  • The importance of regular asthma reviews
  • Creating and using an Asthma Action Plan
  • Recognising worsening asthma symptoms early
  • Managing asthma attacks
  • Using inhalers confidently at school, during sport and in social situations
  • Developing the skills needed for independent asthma management into adulthood

The webinar will conclude with a live Q&A session, where Ruth Morrow, Respiratory Nurse with the Asthma Society of Ireland, will answer questions submitted by attendees.

Who should attend?

This webinar is ideal for:

  • Parents and guardians of teenagers with asthma

Whether your teenager has recently been diagnosed or has been managing asthma for years, this webinar will provide practical advice and evidence-based information to help them stay well and confidently manage their asthma as they move towards adulthood.
