As a toddler, Jack suffered from a lot of breathing problems, including recurring croup and asthma. He missed countless days of school, and his family couldn’t do many of the things that most of us take for granted – simple things like trick-or-treating in the cold, damp evenings at Halloween just weren’t an option for Jack. He felt he was always missing out.
In 2019, Jack had his worst asthma flare up. His mum Caroline tried everything to help Jack’s breathing, but that night nothing worked. By the time the ambulance arrived, he had passed out.
Thankfully, Jack was fine, but Caroline was reminded of just how serious asthma can be. She reached out to us for support, and now uses our Adviceline regularly:
“Jack has been seen by his GP and a respiratory consultant, but the most consistent, helpful and practical support we have received over all these years has come from the Asthma Society. The Adviceline nurse has given me the knowledge to judge whether we needed to go to A&E, what to do if Jack is struggling with his breathing, how to treat his symptoms, and how to keep him healthy and well throughout the winter.
Thanks to her, we have come out the other side. This past winter is the first winter ever that Jack hasn’t been rushed to A&E with serious, frightening breathing difficulties. In 2022, Jack missed 22 days of school, last year he missed just two, and he’s really proud of himself for that.”
