My asthma story: Mary

“I was diagnosed with late adult onset asthma in August 2023, after undergoing many tests at the hospital. Very suddenly, I started suffering shortness of breath, and I'm sure panicking about it made it worse. My 9 year old grandson, who lives with me, has mild asthma and my son also had childhood asthma.

Asthma has affected my life in many ways. I find in very scary - my job involves very physical work, which sometimes makes me out of breath, but I'm luckier than others as I only need a short rest to get it under control. But again, panicking about it makes it worse. I use an inhaler twice daily, which has definitely prevented attacks. I do have a rescue inhaler if needed, but I don’t use it that often.

I have been in touch with the Asthma Society through email and social media. They are extremely informative and I highly recommend their services. They give loads of advice as well as information about breathing exercises, and it is nice to know I can reach out to them when I need to.

I'm still searching for an explanation for my asthma at this stage of my life, but I am thankful for the resources that the Asthma Society provides.”
