Leon & Biola’s Story
Leon was just 12 months of age when he started having recurring dry coughs. He struggled to breathe at night and during nap times. When he got a chest infection, he would gasp for breath and sometimes stop breathing momentarily.
I didn’t sleep with worry and, on our regular trips to the doctor, I was told Leon’s symptoms were nothing to worry about.
It was a colleague who told me about the Asthma Society. At the time, Leon was just 15 months old, and his breathing was worse than ever. I immediately rang their free Adviceline and spoke to one of their respiratory nurses - a call that was lifesaving.
I was looking for support and practical advice to help Leon. I got it, and so much more – the Adviceline nurse even advised me on how to advocate for my son.
I got Leon referred to a specialist, and he was diagnosed with asthma, severe hay fever and dust allergies, and put on an asthma action plan with daily medications.
I still check in with the Adviceline nurse from time to time and with their support, Leon and I are sleeping better knowing Leon is safe and well.
