We have this week joined a number of civil society and professional bodies as part of the Tobacco 21 Alliance to write to Health Minister Stephen Donnelly to welcome his recent comments which indicated that he would be in favour of increasing the legal age of sale of all tobacco products from 18 to 21.
The Alliance believes that raising the legal age to 21 would make it harder for teenagers and adolescents to access tobacco products, deter them from ever initiating, and protect them from a lifetime of smoking.
The recent 20th anniversary of the workplace smoking ban presents us with a unique opportunity to reposition Ireland as a leader in tobacco control by implementing Tobacco 21, which would be a landmark public health measure.
